Why the comparison to lightning?
Your odds of being struck by lightning in the United States according to Wikipedia are 1 in 960,000. According to the National MS Society your odds of being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis are much greater at 1 in 750.
While as many 10 out 100 die from a lightning strike; multiple sclerosis is generally nonlethal. However the life expectancy falls approximately 7 years below the general population. Complications such as cancer and PML a brain disease caused by a suppressed immune system due to treatment; heart disease and stroke due to lifestyle are some of the reasons for this.
The true point of comparison is both can strike with little or no warning. In the case of MS a 20, 30 or 40 year old collapsing as if they had a stroke or going to bed feeling normal only finding when they wake that they are paralyzed or blind.
Besides having multiple sclerosis this is why I want to fund research.
